Education and experience requirements

- Credentials letter
The CWE Welding Instructor Credentials form is completed and submitted with the application, as a PDF.
- Welder certification
A copy of a valid welder ID or certification card, or a passed valid welder examination.
Your step-by-step pathway to CWE
The route AWS publishes, from confirming your qualifications to renewing the credential four years later.
Step 1
Confirm your qualifications
A high school diploma or equivalent, completion of a welding training programme or equivalent education, and a minimum of five years in a role related to welding codes or standards — production, construction, inspection or repair. The CWE Instructor Credentials form is completed and submitted with the application.
Step 2
Complete the exam application
Fill out the CWE Exam Application on my.aws.org with the documentation ready to upload: education, proof of five years of experience, the Instructor Credentials form as a PDF, a valid welder ID or certification card (or a passed welder examination), and a recent passport-style photograph.
Step 3
Submit and pay
Submit the completed application at least 6 weeks before your requested approval date and pay the examination fee — AWS members pay less than non-members. Once processed and approved, a confirmation letter is sent containing the examination details.
Step 4
Pass two welding exams
Part A, a 150-question written exam on welding safety, destructive testing, welding symbols and metallurgy, and Part B, a hands-on exam interpreting WPSs and PQRs, using inspection tools and evaluating weld samples. Minimum 60% on each part.
Step 5
Stay credentialed
The CWE is valid for four years. Renew by submitting the CWE renewal form and affirming two years of activity in welding education or related activities as defined in AWS QC5 — no exams and no PDHs are required.
Exam information
To achieve CWE certification, candidates must pass two out of three CWI exams. Candidates must score at least 60% on each exam to pass.
- Part A — Fundamentals: this 150-question exam covers topics like destructive testing, welding safety, metallurgy, understanding welding symbols, and more.
- Part B — Practical: this hands-on exam tests your ability to apply WPSs and PQRs, use inspection tools, and execute required welds.
- While the Part C — Code Book exam is not required for CWE certification, those aiming for both CWE and CWI credentials should also take this exam.
- To apply for both CWE and CWI credentials simultaneously, candidates must submit the completed CWI/CWE Exam Application and the CWE Welding Instructor Credentials form together.
- Part A is administered by computer-based testing at over 450 Prometric exam centres worldwide; Part B is conducted by AWS through its local representative or international agent.
Validity and renewal
The one place the CWE differs most sharply from the CWI and CWS: there is no re-certification stage.
- The certificate is valid for four years.
- Renewal is by submitting the CWE renewal form and affirming two years of activity in welding education or related activities, as defined in AWS QC5, during the certification period.
- No examinations and no Professional Development Hours are required to renew.
- The credential is renewed rather than re-certified — so there is no nine-year cliff and no Part B retake to plan for. Keeping your teaching experience current is what makes renewal straightforward.
