Frequently Asked Questions
Welding inspection is a critical quality control process that ensures weldments meet the acceptance criteria of specific codes, standards, or other documents. This process helps maintain safety, structural integrity, and compliance with industry regulations.
A Welding Inspector's primary responsibility is to determine if a weldment meets the acceptance criteria of a specific code, standard, or other specification. Additionally, they oversee non-destructive testing procedures and ensure that proper materials are available during testing to maintain quality and safety standards.
A Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is a professional who has demonstrated exceptional attention to detail along with specific knowledge, skills, and abilities in welding inspection. CWIs are often considered the safety nets that catch potentially catastrophic mistakes before they lead to failures.
A CWI's responsibilities include:
- Determining if weldments meet specified acceptance criteria
- Handling qualification records
- Overseeing non-destructive testing
- Ensuring proper materials are available during testing
CWIs must be familiar with welding processes, procedures, welder qualifications, materials, and weld testing limitations. They also need proficiency in reading blueprint drawings, preparing and keeping records, creating reports, and making responsible judgments.
Eligibility is based on education and welding-related work experience:
- No formal education: 9 years of work experience
- High school diploma or GED: 5 years of work experience
- Associate degree in welding: 3 years of work experience
- Bachelor’s degree in welding: 1 year of work experience
Experience must be welding-related, including inspection, supervision, engineering, or quality control.
The CWI exam consists of three parts:
- Part A — Fundamentals: 150 multiple-choice questions on welding processes, safety, and inspection.
- Part B — Practical Inspection: Hands-on assessment using weld samples and inspection tools.
- Part C — Codebook Application: Open-book test on a selected welding code (e.g., AWS D1.1, API 1104).
A minimum score of 72% is required in each section to pass.
