Ashok Perka is a Principal researcher at R&D, Tata Steel, Jamshedpur, India. He has a total of 15 years of industrial experience in the areas of welding research.

Prior to joining Tata Steel, he worked as a welding engineer at L & T’s Hydrocarbon division for five years. As a welding engineer, he was part of several largest offshore construction projects in the world and responsible for developing welding procedures that comply with metallurgical, code, and project specifications. As a welding researcher at Tata Steel R & D, he did research on complex welding challenges associated with thin sheets joining for the automotive applications. Currently he is working on wire-based 3D printing for large-scale parts through innovative solutions in the construction field.

He has a Master’s in Materials Engineering. He is a Certified Welding Inspector (CSWIP 3.1) with extensive knowledge of welding codes like ASME and AWS. He is an executive member of the Indian Institute of Welding (IIW) and is part of the technical committee at various welding conferences. In 2022, he received “Young Engineers award” at NWS-2022, Pune for his presentation on welding-based 3D Printing. In 2018 he received the “Weldman Award” at NWS- 2018, Cochin for best paper in automation. In 2017, he received the “CEO BSP Award” at IC-2017, Chennai for best paper in repair and reclamation in the steel industry. As a main inventor, he received an Indian patent grant for Tata Steel titled MIG for welding of the fuel tank upper body. He has also published several research papers in peer reviewed journals and conferences through his welding research.
