SSAB and Kemppi create a joint digi solution to speed up the welding process

SSAB and welding digitalization pioneer Kemppi have successfully integrated SSAB’s SmartSteel and Kemppi’s WeldEye cloud-based platforms to streamline base material information handling in welding production. The results of the successful pilot are now available for all companies currently utilizing both digital platforms.
“Building cloud-based platforms is a new way of doing business together,” said Niko Korte, Senior Manager of Digital Business Development atSSAB. “We are working our way towards the Internet of Materials. Every initiative like this takes us one step closer to creating a digital identity for steel and complete traceability. We are excited about the future and look forward to partnering with others to create it.”
“The results of the pilot are promising,” informed Juhana Enqvist, Chief Digital Officer at Kemppi. “The material certificates are now automatically sent to WeldEye. Being able to scan products with SmartSteel, get the certificates automatically and document everything gives the customer a complete view of the base materials in the welding process.”
Collecting welding documentation is time-consuming. Documents have to be collected from different source systems and documenting the welding process is done manually. WeldEye, Kemppi’s welding management software, strives to make the process smoother by collecting welding parameters digitally from workstations, and even by adjusting the welding equipment according to digital welding procedure specifications (dWPS). To automate the process one step further, SSAB now offers their SmartSteel data through an interface (API) to be used in the process.
SSAB SmartSteel is the digital identity of steel, storing all the information related to the steel all the way from its manufacturing to delivery, processing, use, and recycling. Launched in May 2018, SmartSteel 1.0 introduced the possibility to scan steel, and to have easy access to its material certificate. Now SSAB offers an API through which base material information and material certificates can be sent to welding equipment automatically. This makes it possible to reduce manual work, adjust the equipment faster, increase arc-on time and reduce the repair rate. It also provides for automatic documentation of the welding process.
Following the successful pilot, SSAB customers who are already using Kemppi’s WeldEye software can get automatic material information from the SmartSteel cloud. New partners are also welcome to contact SSAB in order to start developing new services around SmartSteel.
